Lowell, Michigan. What could be more unexpected than a highly touted football team dressed in the color pink? Typically in sports, one team plays another to win a game, but Lowell High School’s football team is playing to win the battle against a much larger and more vicious opponent: breast cancer. This program is called the Pink Arrow Project. On Friday, September 12th. at is 7:00pm. The Lowell Varsity football team will compete against breast cancer with each player playing in a pink jersey with the name of a cancer survivor or loved one lost on the back of the jersey during this first home football contest verses the Holland High School. Red Arrow Stadium will be emblazoned in Pink for one night. Lowell’s head coach Noel Dean was inspired by the wife of the future Hall of Fame quarterback, Deanna Favre, who wore a pink Green Bay Packer football jersey during games to show support for those with breast cancer. Dean, who lost his father-in-law to cancer and whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, said: “I wanted to use football as a vehicle to educate, motivate and inspire people to help in the fight against cancer. Favre’s actions made me believe that we should do something similar in the Lowell community.”
This program, which will continue with other activities throughout the year, is being presented in partnership Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s Health Care and is supported by many Lowell businesses and civic organizations. “We are so proud to be a part of this heroic effort on the part of the Lowell football team to raise awareness of the issue of breast cancer,” commented Carole Gentry, Manager of Breast Services at the Lacks Cancer Center. All proceeds from this event stay in our community and will benefit three areas of focus. Two scholarships will benefit and the final third of the proceeds will be given to and Lowell Community Wellness, a local non-profit that will be helping to support families in the community who are currently dealing with the physically and emotionally challenges of having breast cancer in a family. The Lowell football team has proven its winning side with 2 state Championships to their credit and in 2007 they were a State Semi-finalists in their division. They have a history of community service choosing many community service projects over the past decade; this effort however, is the largest so far.
